Costa Rica · Getting there
Getting from Liberia Airport to Playa Hermosa or Playas del Coco
Both beaches sit on the Gulf of Papagayo in Guanacaste, a short way from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. This guide is about Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste — not the other Playa Hermosa near Jacó on the central Pacific coast, which is a very different trip from Liberia.
Which beach suits you?
Playas del Coco is the livelier town of the two, with a busier centre of bars, restaurants and nightlife, plus many of the area's tour and dive operators. Plenty of the area around it is still calm — it's simply the place with more going on in the evening.
Playa Hermosa is a quieter beach base with a more laid-back feel, good if you'd rather spend your evenings slowly. Coco is close by when you want more choice for dinner.
Private transfer or taxi
The simplest option after a flight, especially with luggage or a pet carrier. You can pre-book a private shuttle or transfer, ask your hotel or rental host to arrange a pickup, or use the official airport taxis outside arrivals.
Prices and pickup arrangements vary by company, group size and arrival time, so get a written quote in advance, confirm whether it's per vehicle or per person, and check what happens if your flight is delayed.
Rental car
Several rental companies operate from Liberia. A car is handy if you want to explore beyond your beach, but Costa Rica's mandatory insurance can add noticeably to the advertised price — compare the full total before you book.
Ask whether your accommodation has parking, drive in daylight if you can, and check current road conditions in the rainy season, when some smaller local roads can get rough.
Bus
Public buses are the budget option and link Liberia with both beaches, but there's no single direct airport-to-beach service you can count on, and you may need to get from the airport to Liberia's bus terminal first. Schedules change, so confirm current routes and times locally or with your hotel before relying on a bus — especially for a late arrival.
Before you go
- Get current quotes for transfers, taxis and rental cars — I haven't listed prices because they change.
- Drive times depend on traffic, roads and weather, so leave a comfortable buffer.
- Confirm bus timetables and services shortly before you travel.
